Fishing and Animal Agriculture
We Eat Fish and Animals. Stop Eating Them.
Oceans are destroyed because billions eat fish. Land is destroyed because billions eat beef. Dolphins die. Forests burn. The solution is to stop eating animals.
Fishing
Industrial fishing exists because billions eat fish.
Animal agriculture
Land is converted to pastures and crops for livestock feed.
The real problem: we eat animals
Fishing industry exists because we eat fish
Industrial fishing with massive nets exists to supply global demand for fish. 1-3 trillion wild fish are caught annually. For every target fish caught, multiple non-target species are destroyed as bycatch: dolphins, sea turtles, sharks, whales, juvenile fish. Mitsubishi, Japan's fishing fleets, and greenwashing certifications all exist because billions of people eat fish. Stop eating fish: the fishing industry collapses.
Dolphins are killed for fish
Japan kills 20,000+ dolphins annually because the fishing industry claims dolphins compete for fish stocks. This is the cost of human fish consumption. Every dolphin killed is a human choice: to eat fish instead of plants. If humans stopped eating fish, there would be no reason to kill dolphins. The dolphins are not the problem. The consumption is.
Industrial whaling never actually stopped
The International Whaling Commission has had a global moratorium on commercial whaling since 1986, yet Norway, Japan, and Iceland still kill whales commercially most years, several hundred to over a thousand combined, through formal objections, "scientific" permits, or, in Japan's case, withdrawing from the IWC entirely in 2019 to resume commercial hunts openly. A four-decade-old international ban with this much leakage isn't a legal problem, it's an enforcement and demand problem. The demand for whale meat is the same demand driving industrial fishing generally: stop paying for it, and the remaining hunts lose their reason to exist.
Animal agriculture destroys land
77% of farmland globally is used for livestock and livestock feed, yet provides only 18% of calories and 37% of protein. Forests are burned for cattle pastures. Rivers are polluted by runoff. 70+ billion land animals are killed for food annually. This is intentional, industrial-scale killing to feed human demand. It is not necessary.
The nets, the culls, the corporations are symptoms
Fishing nets exist because humans demand fish. Mitsubishi fishes because humans pay for fish. Japan kills dolphins because humans want cheap tuna. The Dolphin Safe mark exists to sell more fish to guilt-free consumers. These are not separate problems - they are all symptoms of one problem: human consumption of animals. Fix the symptom (ban nets, end culls) and the industry adapts. Fix the cause (stop eating animals) and the entire system collapses.
Greenwashing keeps the system alive
Earth Island Institute, Plastic Pollution Coalition, and similar organizations created the "Dolphin Safe" mark to make people feel good about eating fish. It is pure greenwashing. It legitimizes industrial fishing while appearing to protect dolphins. These organizations work with the seafood industry because their goal is not to protect oceans - it is to protect the fishing industry by making consumers comfortable buying fish. Watch "Seaspiracy" to see how this con works.
The only real solution
Stop eating fish. Stop eating animals. Transition to plant-based food. Industrial fishing collapses when humans stop eating fish. Animal agriculture collapses when humans stop eating meat and dairy. Dolphins survive. Forests survive. Oceans recover. Land becomes available for ecosystems, not livestock. This is not about banning nets or fixing fisheries - those are distractions. The solution is simple: eat plants.
What we must do
Stop eating fish. Stop eating meat. Stop eating dairy. Transition entirely to plant-based food. This is the only solution that actually works. Fishing nets, industrial farms, and slaughterhouses exist because we pay for animal products. Individual choices ripple: every plant-based meal is a fish not caught, an animal not killed, a forest not burned. Systemic change starts with personal consumption choices. The oceans, the forests, the animals, and your own health depend on this. Eat plants. Save the planet.
